Mylene Amelie Styling Services with Dog Chester explaining why style advice is confusing

Why Style Advice Feels Confusing (And What Actually Makes You Beautiful)

What Personal Style Is Actually About

There’s a conversation happening right now around style, beauty, and people's bodies that feels louder than ever. Trends are shifting faster. Bodies are becoming trends. Faces are being reshaped, refined, and repeated. And underneath all of it, there’s this quiet pressure to keep up. To fix. Literally everything, until you look exactly like today's body, face and style trend.

But I've always seen style differently; personal style was never meant to be about becoming someone else. It was meant to be about recognizing yourself. Becoming more you.

The Problem With Most Style Advice

Most style advice is built around categories (body type, colour seasons and personal style essences). And while these systems can be helpful, they often get interpreted in a way that creates something else entirely. A horrible hierarchy. It's suddenly as if certain body types are better (curvy is in, thin is out), that certain colouring is more desirable - hello remember the whole 'high contrast versus low contrast' was more beautiful argument? Or let's not forget millennials obsession with being tanned to the point of oompa loompa.  And man oh man the PR campaign for (and at some point against) freckles is shameful on so many levels. The message was clear: certain features are more valuable. But your body does not have value in that way.

It’s not currency. It’s not something that increases or decreases based on how closely it aligns with a trend. It’s a container. One that changes, evolves, and moves through life with you. And it is so beautiful when you stop to admire it instead of trying to fix it all the time.

So Where Does Beauty Come From?

Well I'll tell you what, it does not from fitting into a category. It certainly doesn't come from following the newest body trends.

Beauty has always come from one thing and one thing only:

That you are unique. That’s it.

That’s the part that never changes. Across centuries, generations, age, life circumstances. You will never be replicated.

Why Comparison Always Leads to Frustration

When you compare yourself to someone else, you’re comparing: Your unique combination
to someone else’s unique combination. And that will never match. No one wins in that scenario, every single time.

This is why following some trends always feels slightly off or some style recommendations are kind of okay...but not quite right for you.

You’re trying to apply something that was never designed for you. This makes for great marketing tactics, but not happy fulfilled people.

What Colour Analysis, Body Types, and Essences Are Actually For

I often hear this phrase "I don't want to know my best colours, it puts me into a box". These analysis are far from putting you in a box. They are not there to define you. They are not there to limit you. They are not there to assign value.

They are simply tools, ways of helping you see yourself more clearly. Of understanding what combination of elements came together to make you uniquely beautiful.

The aim should always be to bring your attention back to what makes you different. In a good way! If it makes you feel bad about yourself, it's marketing trying to give you a problem to fix.

The Shift That Changes Everything

The goal is not to ask: “What do I need to change?”. The goal is to ask:

“What is already here — and how do I honour it?”

Because when you focus on that, your style becomes easier, shopping choices narrow down & you finally have the confidence to look to large fashion corporation and say "yeah, I'm good. That's just not for me.". That's power.

A More Grounded Way to See Beauty

If you expose yourself to one narrow version of beauty long enough, it starts to feel like the standard. But when you step away from that and start expanding what you look at:  different faces, different bodies, different ages something shifts.

You begin to see what was always there: There is no single version of beauty. There is an infinite one. Which is reflected individually in us all.

The Work I Do (And Why It Matters)

When I work with clients, I’m not trying to fit them into a category. I’m looking for what makes them them. The way they move. The way they express themselves. The details that can’t quite be named, but are always there. It's the most rewarding experiencing discovering someone's unique beauty, because I never see the same beauty twice. It can feel like discovering gold over and over again.

Once I discover what makes you beautiful, we use clothing, colour, and shape to reflect that back. Never to change it, but to honour it.

Because You Never Lost It

There’s nothing you need to buy to become beautiful. There’s nothing you need to fix to become worthy. The only thing that gets lost… is the awareness of what’s already there.

And once you see it again you can’t unsee it. That sticks for life.
