The Soft Natural Body Type: Softness & Width

If you’ve ever looked at your body and thought…

“I feel soft… but not delicate.”

Or:

“Why do structured or stiff clothes feel restrictive on me?”

You might be a Soft Natural. But before we begin, an important reminder: Your body type is not your style.

Your body type describes your physical structure and how clothing interacts with your frame. Your personal style is influenced far more by your essence, which shows up through who you are, your movements, and overall presence. I focus on essences separately because they deserve their own dedicated space.

This guide focuses purely on the Soft Natural body type and how clothing can work in harmony with this structure.

What is a Soft Natural?

Soft Naturals are defined by a combination of width and softness.

The frame underneath is broader and slightly muscular, while the flesh sitting on top appears soft rather than sharp or angular.

This creates a look that is:

Relaxed, but shaped
Soft, but not delicate
Structured, but never rigid

Soft Natural Body Type Characteristics

Common Physical Traits:

  • Moderate height
  • Broad shoulders and upper ribcage
(Many Soft Naturals need to size up in tops to accommodate width)
  • Soft looking flesh layered over a wider frame
(Even at lower weights, the body appears more soft than angular)
  • Long arms and legs
  • Larger hands and feet
  • Weight gain tends to show in the thighs
(The shoulders may widen slightly and the face becomes softer)
  • A soft hourglass effect remains
(Though waist definition can blur slightly with weight gain)
  • When building muscle, the body still retains softness
(Muscles do not appear dry or sharply defined)

Soft Naturals are often slightly more compact or smaller looking than Flamboyant Naturals, with more softness throughout.

Soft Natural Women May Also Have

  • A smaller waist in proportion to bust and hips
  • A soft hourglass shape that is not extreme or sharply defined

You Are Likely Not a Soft Natural If…

  • Your hips are very straight or angular
  • Your limbs are extremely lean or sharp
  • Your overall appearance is very delicate or petite
  • Your frame is evenly balanced with no visible width

Why Clothing Can Feel Off for Soft Naturals

Soft Naturals often fall into two extremes:

  • Going too structured
  • Or going too oversized and shapeless

Neither works. Because your body needs:

Room for width + softness + gentle shape

When clothing is too stiff, it restricts your width. When clothing is too shapeless, it hides your structure completely.

Dressing the Soft Natural

Your goal is to balance:

Relaxed structure + soft waist emphasis

Clothing should follow your body, not fight it.

Your Core Dressing Lines:

  • Slightly flowy silhouettes
  • Soft waist emphasis
  • Minimal detail
  • Relaxed, unconstructed designs
  • Natural fabrics and materials

Think: Relaxed, but not shapeless

How This Translates Into Real Outfits

Tops

  • Loose, draped, or open necklines work best
  • Avoid tight, closed necklines near the shoulders
  • Minimal detail keeps the look harmonious
  • Sleeves should be free flowing or gently tapered
  • Wrap tops are an excellent option
  • Aim for tops that skim the body with space
(Avoid both overly tight and stiff shapeless fits)
  • A French tuck can create soft waist definition
  • Soft peplum styles can work well
  • Sweaters should be slightly oversized, not extreme
    (Avoid tight, restrictive knits)

Bottoms

  • Pants should follow curves without clinging
  • Avoid overly tight or restrictive styles
  • Tie waist and paperbag styles are very flattering
  • Slightly billowy pants that taper at the ankle work well
  • Soft wide leg and bootcut styles are great options
  • High waisted styles are flattering, but do not need to be extreme
  • Softer denim works better than rigid denim
  • Linen pants are especially beautiful
  • Wrap skirts are incredibly flattering
  • Midi lengths tend to be most harmonious
  • Shorts should allow room for curves
    (Avoid stiff, structured fabrics)

Dresses

  • Slightly flowy silhouettes are ideal
  • Softness around the shoulders and upper arms is very flattering
  • Avoid overly tight dresses
  • If wearing something more fitted, balance it with softness elsewhere
  • Wrap dresses are a staple
  • Open necklines and draping on the upper body are key
  • Always create some waist definition
(This should feel soft, not forced)

Outerwear

  • Jackets should feel relaxed with movement
  • Styles with ties or belts work well
  • Mid-thigh length is especially flattering
  • Avoid shoulder pads or sharp structure
  • Look for rounded shoulder shapes
  • Ideal materials include suede, silk, cotton, and linen
  • Outerwear should cascade naturally over the body

The Most Important Piece: Soft Waist Emphasis

This is what brings everything together.

You do not want:

  • Tight cinching
  • Rigid tailoring
  • Overly defined hourglass shaping

Instead: Gentle definition that follows your natural curves

Where Most People Get Stuck

Even when you understand your body type, something can still feel off. That is because your body is only one part of the equation.

Where Beauty Blend Comes In

You are not just a body type. Your full Beauty Blend includes:

  • Your body
  • Your colouring
  • Your essence

And this is what actually creates your personal style.

For example a Soft Natural could also be:

  • True Summer
  • With Romantic + Ethereal + Classic essence

Which creates a completely different expression than someone else with the same body type.

If You’re Trying to Figure This Out On Your Own…

You might feel like:

  • You understand parts of it
  • But cannot fully bring it together

That is completely normal. Because styling is not about one system. It is about how everything works together.

Final Thoughts

Soft Naturals shine when clothing feels relaxed, breathable, and gently shaped. When fabric flows naturally and the waist is softly acknowledged, everything starts to feel harmonious. If things have felt off before, it is not you.

You just need clothing that moves with your body instead of working against it.
